Winter's First Night

I know if I was coming home to you
The ice and snow wouldn’t feel so cold.
If I was met with your smile at the door
I wouldn’t have to deal with the pain
Of thinking about you with somebody else.
The snow falls into my eyes as I try to walk,
I stagger blindly by night trying to find you—
You’re by the fireplace as he keeps you warm.
I dream of being in his place, to have his voice;
But instead I return to where the lights are dim
And memories are the firewood beneath my heart.
Winter brings deathly laughter and a foreign world,
You’re gone awry in my mind and I can’t forget
The lingering moments that meant so much to me.
I can’t stop thinking about you—there is ice all around;
I hope on this night you stay warm.
