The Devil Within Me

Once I spoke with a thoughtful mind

As I watched the smiles, soft and kind,

But terror has since stripped me of my flesh—

Torn down my walls and ripped the delicate mesh.

The evil that consumes me knocks at my door—

Whispering secrets and twisted lore.

Evil’s coy smile, with delicate grace

Takes hold and nails me into place.

My heart lies still by those clawed feet,

As I bow down in shame and defeat.

Left to brood in the words I had spoken

Before passion was contrived of tokens

And strings of ephemeral caresses.  

The beast listens to my second guesses

Laughing at my desperate plea,

Reflecting the bane that is me.

Exiling sanity through selfish action—

The mirror before me, an image of vain attraction,

Shutters and cracks as the room empties.

In loneliness I never thought I see,

No tears wept for my sin,

For I am left, the devil’s kin.

Step Out of The Shadows

Step out of the shadows, feel the burning light—

Let yourself become a child, exposed and defenseless—

Yearn for greatness through watered eyes.

Joy, evasive, is always on the horizon,

Happiness mocks you, above your reach.

This is your life, without hope or direction—

Years pass and distance separates your silly dreams,

A child forever, forced to become an adult.

So rapid you age, no time to tie the knot,

Strangers are growing far apart.

A bitterness is left behind with each heartbreak

Anger that feeds your ambition,

Leaves you feeling empty inside

Step out of the shadows, feel the burn against your skin,

Cast aside the cloak that keeps you numb

And curse and scream,

Lash out and release the hate,

Break everything not yet broken—

Forget the words not yet been spoken.
